Online mentoring for advanced classical musicians
Some musical questions cannot be separated from the particular repertoire, performer or circumstances in which they arise. They may concern the direction of a phrase, the shape of a whole work, an audition, a competition, a chamber project, or a professional choice that affects which artistic priorities and musical work deserve attention next.
I work with advanced classical musicians through individual mentoring shaped around what is actually in front of us: repertoire, recordings, interpretative questions and, when relevant, the wider professional context.
Different questions can lead to the same kind of mentoring
the immediate question may be interpretative: how time moves through a phrase, why a climax arrives too early, or why an idea that feels convincing internally is not yet clear in sound.
the musical question sits inside an audition, competition, recital, orchestral setting or chamber project. Sometimes it is broader: which project deserves attention, what repertoire should carry the next stage of the work, or how a professional choice relates to current artistic priorities and realistic musical possibilities.
The starting points differ. The mentoring does not assume that they require the same answer.
From intention to sound
Much of the process begins by listening closely to what is actually happening, rather than only to what was intended.
A question can then become more specific. We might compare two distributions of time, change where energy accumulates, test a different articulation, reconsider the proportion of a section or listen again to the relationship between the score and the sounding result.
The aim is not simply to collect more ideas, but to make musical choices concrete enough to hear, compare and examine.
How the mentoring worksAn active exchange, without a prescribed interpretation
I do not approach the music as if I already possess the version another performer should reproduce.
I may disagree with a choice, hear the problem differently, suggest another possibility or introduce a specific musical tool. We can then test what changes.
My role is active. The aim, however, is for the final interpretation to become one the musician can hear, understand, justify and sustain without depending on my approval.
Where this mentoring sits
This is not foundational instrumental tuition, a general course in musical expression or motivational coaching.
Instrumental technique may enter the discussion when it affects phrasing, sound or an interpretative possibility. When the central issue is basic instrument-specific technique, however, the specialist instrumental teacher has a different and necessary role.
The mentoring is intended for musicians who already bring substantial training and can work independently, but want sustained attention on interpretation, repertoire, artistic choices or a professional circumstance that needs to be considered in relation to the music.
If this relates to what you are working on now
You do not need to fit yourself into a predefined programme before getting in touch.
Tell me what you are working on, the question occupying you, and any context that seems relevant. I will read it personally and consider whether this kind of mentoring makes sense for what you want to explore.
